A radiology information system (RIS) is the software a radiology practice or imaging center uses to schedule exams, register patients, manage imaging orders and exam status, and support radiology billing and reporting. It is the imaging equivalent of a practice management system and usually works alongside a PACS, which stores the images.
Because the RIS holds the exam schedule, it is the system an AI receptionist for imaging has to read and write. An AI that only takes a message leaves a scheduler to key the exam into the RIS later; one integrated with the RIS books the exam into the right modality and slot during the call.
