Exam prep is the set of instructions a patient follows before an imaging exam so it can be performed and read properly, such as NPO (nothing by mouth) for a set number of hours, drinking oral contrast, adjusting certain medications as instructed, or arriving early for IV contrast screening. Instructions vary by exam and protocol.
A patient who arrives without following prep usually cannot be scanned, which costs the practice an expensive scanner slot and the patient a second trip.
