What is Operatory?

An operatory is a treatment room in a dental practice, equipped with a chair, and it is the unit a dental schedule is actually built on. A dental appointment is booked into a specific operatory with a specific provider, not simply into a time slot.

This is why general-purpose scheduling tools book dental appointments badly. A practice with six operatories and three hygienists has a calendar with parallel columns, each with its own rules about what can happen in it and who can work there. An AI receptionist that cannot see operatories can only offer times that look free, which is not the same as times that are actually bookable.
